History of Advent Calendars
For over 150 years children and adults alike have been enjoying the joys of an Advent Calendar. Its origins go back to Germany where it evolved from a simple tradition of marking off the days till Christmas in chalk or hanging a small Christmas image up each day to the printed calendars with small doors we enjoy today.
The popularity of Advent Calendars in the United States can be credited in part to a newspaper article that showed president Eisenhower with his grandchildren enjoying one of Richard Selmers advent calendars called Little Town. This historic calendar is reprinted today for those of you wanting a piece from the past.
Advent calendars have expanded from the simple paper pieces to more involved fabric and felt wall hangings as well as larger wooden advent calendars that are free standing. These wooden calendars have small compartments where you can place candy, ornaments, or a small gift for each day leading up to Christmas.
In todays world we now have online interactive advent calendars and there are even living advent calendars in towns that have windows in their various homes decorated for each night. Saltaire Village, Yorkshire , England is one such village. A wonderful concept to involve a community and promote the nightly walking of a neighborhood leading up to Christmas.
Who can imagine what future calendars await us and the form they will take but whatever the form they all hold the same promise of the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.
